How to compare protein powder prices: cost per serving and protein content

A bigger tub is not always better value

To compare protein powder prices, start with the pack price and number of servings. Then check how much protein each serving contains. Two tubs can have the same number of servings but different serving sizes and protein content.

The best choice for your basket also depends on flavour, ingredients, allergens and the total delivered price. A lower price per gram is only useful if the product fits your preferences and you will use it.

Work out the cost per serving

Cost per serving = pack price ÷ servings per pack.

A fictional £30 tub with 30 servings costs £1 per serving. A fictional £36 tub with 40 servings costs 90p per serving. These examples illustrate calculations and are not product offers.

If the label gives only pack weight and serving size, divide pack weight by serving size using the same units. A 900g pack with a 30g serving contains 30 servings. Use label weights rather than assuming every scoop weighs the same amount.

Compare the amount of protein too

For a consistent price comparison, calculate the cost of a fixed quantity of protein. Here we use 25g simply as a comparison unit; it is not an intake recommendation.

Cost per 25g of protein = pack price ÷ total grams of protein in the pack × 25.

Fictional examples for comparing value
Measure Product A Product B
Pack price £30 £36
Servings 30 40
Protein per serving 20g 18g
Total protein in pack 600g 720g
Cost per serving £1.00 £0.90
Cost per 25g of protein £1.25 £1.25

Product B costs less per serving in this example, but both have the same price per 25g of protein. The pack price alone does not tell the full story.

Check the exact flavour and size

Read the nutrition panel for the variant you intend to buy. Do not assume that another flavour, pack size or similarly named product has identical ingredients or nutrition.

  • Compare pack weight and servings per pack.
  • Check protein per serving and serving weight.
  • Read ingredients and allergen information.
  • Consider flavour, texture and pack size.
  • Check availability, delivery charges and delivery estimates.

Include delivery in the comparison

A £30 tub with £4 delivery costs £34 delivered. A £32 tub with £2 delivery also costs £34 delivered. Apply any eligible discount before comparing totals, and check whether a mixed basket changes delivery costs or timing.

Protein Superstore charges for delivery. Mixed-warehouse baskets can have combined charges and separate deliveries. See our delivery information and check your final basket total.

Is the cheapest option always the right one?

Price is one part of the decision. Ingredients, allergens, available flavours and pack size may matter more to you. Compare products that meet your requirements first, then use the calculations above to assess value within that shortlist.
