Protein scoop size vs serving size: why grams matter

Use grams when comparing protein powders. Scoops can differ in shape and volume, and powders differ in density. One scoop from one tub is not an equal quantity to one scoop from another.

Find the labelled serving weight

Look for the serving size in grams beside the nutrition table or directions. Then check how the manufacturer relates that weight to its scoop. A level scoop and a heaped scoop are different instructions, so use the wording for the product you have.

The protein figure is part of that serving, not its entire weight. For example, 22g of protein in a 32g serving means the serving contains 32g of powder in total. The remaining weight includes the other components of the formula.

Use two comparisons

  • Per 100g: helps compare the composition of two powders on the same weight basis.
  • Per labelled serving: shows the nutrition of the quantity the manufacturer describes as one serving.

Both are useful. Comparing only per-serving protein can be misleading if one product uses considerably more powder in its stated serving.

Work out the pack's approximate servings

Divide the pack weight by the serving weight. A 1,600g pack with a 32g serving gives 50 servings. This calculation explains pack size; it does not tell you how many servings you should consume.

For planning reorders, use your own actual frequency. If you use four labelled servings a week, a 50-serving pack represents about twelve and a half weeks. If you prepare shakes differently, your pack will last a different length of time.

Keep the comparison practical

Check the exact flavour, preparation directions and whether nutrition is shown for dry powder or for a drink made with milk. Use the scoop supplied for that product and follow its directions. If an accurate powder weight matters, measure by weight rather than transferring a scoop from a different tub.
