How to compare pre-workouts: a practical label-reading checklist

Two pre-workout tubs can look similar while containing different ingredients, serving sizes and numbers of servings. Use this checklist to compare what you are buying, without choosing on branding or tub price alone.

1. Check the exact formula and flavour

Start with the full product name, version, pack size and flavour. Brands can sell several formulas under similar names. Read the label for the exact version in your basket rather than relying on a review of an older product or another flavour.

2. Read the labelled serving size

Find the serving size in grams and the manufacturer’s directions. A scoop is a measuring tool, and scoop sizes are not interchangeable between products. Check whether the front-of-pack serving count refers to a full serving or a smaller portion.

3. Compare caffeine information

Look for the stated caffeine amount per labelled serving and read the ingredient list and warnings. A product described as a pump formula is not automatically caffeine-free. If you specifically want a product without caffeine, browse our caffeine-free pump collection and verify the individual label before ordering.

This guide compares shopping information; it does not set a caffeine intake or serving recommendation. Follow the product warnings and directions.

4. Look at ingredient amounts

Compare ingredients on the same basis: per serving with per serving, rather than per 100g with per scoop. If the label gives only a total blend weight, that does not tell you the amount of every ingredient within it. More ingredients or a longer list does not, by itself, establish better value for your needs.

5. Work out the cost per serving

Divide the price by the number of labelled servings. For example, a hypothetical £24 tub with 30 servings costs 80p per serving. A £30 tub with 40 servings costs 75p per serving. Those figures compare price only: check that the formulas and serving information are comparable before choosing.

6. Include the practical details

  • Is your preferred flavour currently available?
  • Does the pack size suit how you plan to use it?
  • Are ingredients and warnings clearly available for the exact formula?
  • What is the final price including delivery?

Protein Superstore charges for delivery. A basket supplied from more than one warehouse can have combined delivery charges and separate parcels. Read our delivery information and check the total before paying.
