Protein Superstore branded plant protein shake beside bowls of pea and rice ingredients

Choosing a plant protein powder: the label checklist

Start with the ingredient list. Plant protein powders can use pea, rice, soya or other plant sources, either alone or in blends. The phrase plant protein describes a category, not one fixed formula or texture.

Know what is in the blend

Read which protein ingredients the manufacturer uses, then check the nutrition for your chosen flavour. A blend of sources is not automatically better or worse than a single-source product. Compare the finished product's labelled protein content and other details that matter to you.

Flavoured powders can also contain sweeteners, thickeners and other ingredients. If you prefer a shorter ingredient list or want to avoid a particular ingredient, compare the actual lists rather than the front-of-pack design.

Vegan and allergen-free are different claims

A vegan label does not automatically mean a product is free from all allergens or cross-contact risks. Soya, for example, is an allergen. Read the declared allergens and any precautionary statements on the specific product. If you have a food allergy, use the allergen information rather than treating vegan branding as a safety guarantee.

Compare the serving you will prepare

  1. Check the serving weight in grams, not just the number of scoops.
  2. Compare protein per serving and per 100g.
  3. Read the liquid quantity and preparation directions.
  4. Check how many labelled servings the pack contains.

The liquid you choose changes the final drink's nutrition and texture. Water and a plant-based drink are not interchangeable when comparing the prepared values. Start with each powder's dry nutrition panel, then consider how you will use it.

Choose the flavour you want to return to

Texture and sweetness preferences are personal. When moving to an unfamiliar formula, choose a pack size you are comfortable committing to. We do not claim every plant protein tastes or mixes the same.
